The Top Ten Contemporary Western Artists

As someone who has sold Western art online since 2003, I’m going to share a list of the top ten Western artists that are still producing new works to this day. This list is comprised mainly by my customers over the years (who have voted with their wallets). There is a small percentage of my opinion in this list as well. Now, on with the list:

Pretend that you hear a drumroll….

10) Gordon Snidow - This artist’s best known works are his Coors beer cowboy series from the late 70’s and 80’s. He also produced some wonderful art featuring vintage cowgirls.

9) Jack Sorenson - Often referred to the Norman Rockwell of the West.

8) Nancy Cawdrey - An abstract artist that is a favorite with women, she paints in vibrant colors. Silk painting is her specialty.

7) David Stoecklein - He is a photographer, which I consider an art form. He photographed a lot of the “Marlboro Man” images from years ago. He specializes in sexy cowgirl photography as well. Sexy, but hardly pornographic.

6) Martin Grelle - His work is hard to find which means that I don’t sell as much as I probably could. He paints cowboys and horses and incorporates Native American images as well.

5) Jack Terry - This Texas artist paints beautiful Western landscapes featuring cowboys in various situations.

4) G Harvey - His first name is Gerald but no one refers to him by that name. He has a rabid fan base. Most of his reproductions are sold out the day that they are issued. Very prolific. Known for his “City Series” and his “Western Series”.

3) David Devary - Not all that well known at this time but that will change. His elegant cowgirl paintings are truly unique. One look at that them and you’re mesmerized.

2) Chris Owen - About a year from now he’ll probably be #1. He doesn’t churn out his artwork like others. He mainly works in watercolors but his new oil paintings are breathtaking. Just about all of his reproductions will sell out eventually. He is a real shooting star in the Western art arena.

1) Tim Cox - A winner of a number of awards, too many to even begin to list. Cowboys, Mountains, Horses, and Landscapes. His work is truly magical.
