Rachel Alexandra Wins Woodward Stakes at Saratoga

The great filly Rachel Alexandra just won the Woodward Stakes at Saratoga Race Course surviving blistering fractions and holding off the fast closing Stephen Foster winner Macho Again by a head.

Rachel Alexandra was again ridden by jockey Calvin Borel and may have sewed up 2009 horse of the year honors in winning the Woodward Stakes.

She is the first filly to win the Woodward in a long time.  Despite the small winning margin, it was a remarkable performance as she was pressed all the way in a place known as the “Graveyard of Favorites”, Saratoga.

Secretariat Will Be Portrayed By Larry in Disney Movie

A North Dakota thoroughbred named Larry will be the horse that will portray the great Secretariat in the upcoming Disney movie.  I understand that he has an extensive record on Broadway and that had a bearing on the decision to cast him.  He also did a bit of “summer livestock” as well.

Race Horse Champion Alysheba is Dead at 25

The champion race horse Alysheba was euthanized on Friday at an equine medical center in Lexington.  Alysheba won the Kentucky Derby in 1987 and the Breeder’s Cup Classic in 1988 (at a very dark Churchill Downs).  He was trained by Jack Van Berg and ridden mostly in his racing career by Chris McCarron.  He had just returned to America in 2008 after spending eight years in Saudi Arabia.  Check out some prints of Alysheba in his racing career below:
